How to Flush Your Yamaha Outboard with a Garden Hose: Flush Adapter Guide
Share
Every time you run your outboard in saltwater or dirty water, it pulls that water through its cooling system. When you pull the boat out, some of it stays behind. Over time, salt crystals, sand and silt can build up in the water passages, restricting flow and contributing to overheating and corrosion.
A freshwater flush after each trip is one of the simplest and cheapest things you can do to look after your motor. Many Yamaha outboards have a built-in flush port, so flushing is as easy as connecting a garden hose. That's where a flush adapter comes in.

How to flush your outboard with the adapter
- Check your owner's manual first. Flushing procedures vary between Yamaha models, including whether the motor should be tilted up or down and how long to flush for.
- Connect the adapter to your garden hose fitting.
- Fit the adapter to the flush port on your outboard.
- Turn the water on and let fresh water run through the cooling system for the time recommended in your manual.
- Turn the water off, remove the adapter and refit the flush port cap.
Most Yamaha manuals that cover the flush port say not to run the engine while flushing through the port. Always follow the instructions for your specific motor.
Tips for getting the most out of flushing
- Flush after every saltwater trip. The sooner you flush after retrieving the boat, the less time salt has to dry and crystallise inside the motor.
- Don't forget dirty freshwater. Muddy creeks and rivers can leave silt in the cooling passages too.
- Rinse the outside as well. A quick hose-down of the leg, cowl and trailer helps reduce corrosion on the outside.
- Keep a spare adapter in the boat. That's why they come in a 2 pack: one for the ramp, one for home.
- Replace the flush port cap. Always refit the cap before you next run the motor.
